TREE AND GRASS SERIES

ISOLATION SITE SERIES
My exploration of site specific art is very fulfilling for me.I examine my connection with nature and my separation from nature. It is enjoyable working with natural objects in natural settings. These pieces are not grand productions, but rather contemplations.
BROKEN HEART
KOREAN MAP DRIFTING TO THE OCEAN
I can't visit my county Korea often so the feelings of missing home made me create this piece. I used rice paper, which my mom had sent me for art supplies, to create the shape of the Korean map with earthen clay I found on the ground, and put them on the river.  My impetus to create this work was emotional desire; Korean maps symbolized Korea, and me, flowing down the river, going back to my mother.

This piece describes emotional pain, as everyone feels at times. I broke a white plate and lay the pieces in the river to show the original shape with cracks. Then I stood so that the plate occupied my shadow, where my heart would be. From there, I shot a photograph.
The specific site inspired me to make this piece. It was an old water tank building in Radford, VA that belongs to the Norfolk Southern rail system. I went to the office and asked one of the workers if I could take photos inside the building. I got the permission. The building was very dark and filled with a lot of junk, such as bedsprings, old rusted metal furniture, and climbing plants. I felt that the place reminded me of a clay installation I created in Korea, which expressed the feeling of isolation. The atmosphere and color in the water tank building and the piece I created in Korea are similar. I took photographs of myself holding a window, symbolizing escape from feelings of isolation.
After creating these digital images, I made                      combining metal rods, a window, and the images of me, holding a window in the building. I feel that this approach is especially unique because it used three different techniques to create the sculpture: photographing performance art with objects in specific sites, adding computer manipulation to make the images visually work, and incorporating it all in a sculpture form. I’m interested in continuing this new direction of combining digital images with site-specific art and sculpture.

I say “site- specific” for this piece, because it could not have existed without the spaces where it was installed. It was a 5x 7 foot empty skylight space in the ceiling that fills with light. I created several figures made of masking tape and hung them in that unique space.
